The first fortress [p. 103] was destroyed during the wars with England, and Charles V began the present structure, which has been enlarged and beautified by succeding princes, especially by Louis XIV who was born here.
The palace has the form of a castle, surrounded by a dry ditch. A magnificent stone gallery runs around the middle of the whole structure, which is of an oval figure. The view towards river and plains is admirable – Paris, St. Denis and Marly are all in sight. »</dc:description>
