History
La Commission de la Topographie des Gaules (CTG) est une commission de savants créée par Napoléon III le 17 juillet 1858, avec pour objectifs de dresser trois cartes et de rédiger deux dictionnaires visant à éclairer la topographie antique du territoire national. Pour ce faire, la CTG -qui compte moins de 20 membres à sa création- va immédiatement tisser un grand réseau à travers le pays en nommant des correspondants dans tous les départements, s'appuyant souvent sur les sociétés savantes locales. Officiers, ingénieurs, archivistes, professeurs de lycée, hommes d'église et autres notables sont ainsi mobilisés pour mener des recherches dans leurs régions respectives et faire remonter ces informations à Paris, au Ministère de l'Instruction publique dont dépend la Commission.
La CTG a survécu à la chute du Second Empire ; elle ne disparaît que le 20 janvier 1880 lorsqu'elle est officiellement remplacée par la Commission de géographie historique de l'ancienne France.

Les travaux de la CTG, menés sur le terrain mais aussi dans les bibliothèques devaient servir à l'empereur pour la rédaction de son Histoire de Jules César, ouvrage contesté mais néanmoins très novateur dans son approche. Au-delà du projet de l'empereur, les documents parvenus jusqu'à nous montrent que la CTG est étroitement liée à la fondation du “musée des Antiquités celtiques et gallo-romaines”, ancêtre du musée d'Archéologie nationale. Les travaux de la CTG contribuent également à la connaissance du territoire et à l'émergence d'une archéologie scientifique.
