Récit par Thomas Blaikie de son passage au château du Val à Saint-Germain-en-Laye

« Dimanche 14 went to St. Germain to deside a plantation for a vue from the Gardens of the Prince de Beauvau at Lavalle a House he has between St Germains and Maison ; those Gardens are Layd out under the Derections of Mr Robert one of the first Landskape painters in France yet however fine his ideas is upon canvas yet upon the ground they are without judgement as it is not astonishing he knows nothing of the effects of trees nor there color after a feu years’ growth ; his walks are much in the same confused crooked way and although all has been planted methodically according to the rules of painting yet the whole is real confusion ; this prooves that a great painter may not know how to take a vue to the best advantage when done but despossing of those plantations requires judgement and experience ; this Gardin stands upon a rising ground bordered on the one side by the forest of St Germains ; to the right side is a tolerable vue upon the Rever Seine. »
